Mumbo Island
Mumbo is the perfect spot for a few days’ relaxation after a safari. A tiny jungle-clad hideaway in the middle of the lake, it has very little in the way of things to do – except snorkel or kayak among the bright blue and yellow tropical fish, test out the collection of well-placed hammocks and order another Kuche Kuche beer. And that’s its appeal. Guests stay in thatched “tents” perched on boulders overlooking the clear water.
Danforth Yachting
The emphasis is on sailing and watersports at this friendly lodge and yacht charter company in Cape Maclear, at the lake’s southern end. When you’re not scuba diving, fishing or wakeboarding, you can relax in a hammock on shady lawns that slope down to the water. The lodge has eight simple air-conditioned rooms, and a stay can be combined with a sailing safari on board the owners’ yacht .
Pumulani
This is one of the more luxurious lodges on the lakeshore. There are 10 villas, with sliding doors which open on to a wooden deck with views of the lake, an infinity pool and a beach bar. You can try your hand at kayaking or snorkelling or sign up for a sunset cruise on a wooden dhow. Many visitors combine a stay at the lodge with a safari in the South Luangwa national park.
Chintheche Inn
This comfortable 10-room hotel is set on a lovely stretch of beach on the lake’s northern shore, with the Viphya mountains as a backdrop. Snorkel, swim, cycle or take a tour of a local village, returning for dinner served under the stars.
