The Malawi national netball team leaves for Singapore Wednesday to participate in the World Championships which takes place from July 3-10.

Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) general-secretary Hellen Mpinganjira told Nyasa Times that a squad of 12 players has made it for Singapore.

The new-look squad include Australia based Mwayi ‘Professor’ Kumwenda, newly installed captain Grace ‘Pincord’ Mwafulirwa, Sindi ‘Sniper’ Simutowe and Joyce Mvula.

Others are Ellen Chibokho, Beatrice Kadango, Bridget Kumwenda, Tinna Kamuyambeni, Florence Chirwa, Joanna Kachilika, Caroline Ngwira and Towera Vinkhumbo.

Malawi Queens will fly via South Africa to Hong Kong before jetting to Singapore on Thursday where Mwayi Kumwenda will join them the same day.

“The team will have a warm-up friendly match with world number one netball side New Zealand on July 1,” Mpinganjira disclosed.

She said a final build-up match will be on July 2 against Sri Lanka before the tournament gets under way.

Coach Edith Kaliati said the morale in the camp “is very high” and that the “vibe is just awesome.”

“I really believe we will do the nation proud at the World Championship,” said the coach asking for prayers from Malawians.

The Queens start their campaign against England on Monday 4 July before facing Malaysia and Barbados in Pool D.

The top two teams from each pool will qualify for the quarter-finals with the final to take place on Sunday 10 July.

World Netball Championship 2011 Live Online
