Nsanje, Blantyre, Kasungu and Nkhata bay districts are worst affected by rainfall and flooding. Heavy rains have been continuous in parts of Mulanje, Blantyre, Chiradzulu and Thyolo in the southern region of Malawi. Thousands of people displaced and many houses destroyed. Malawi is among the world’s least developed countries. The economy is heavily based in agriculture, with a largely rural population.  In some township of Blantyre city, some houses, buildings collapsed as a result of the heavy rainfall.

About 33 families are homeless in the Kasungu Township following a severe storm that swept across the district on Friday. The incident is the fourth of its kind since the rainy season started in Kasungu, raising fears of more devastation. The Juma location in Kasungu and Kalenga trading centre in Chief Wimbe were some of the heavily affected areas.

Current the government has sent a helicopter to help rescuing victims that has been trapped due to the disaster in Nsanje. The Malawi Red Cross Society donated relief items to the affected families during a similar incident that happened in December. The organization provided shelter kits to over 33 families.
