Minister of Economic Planning Atupele Muluzi accused Mzimba North Parliamentarian Goodall Gondwe of misleading the nation on poverty levels. Muluzi was reacting to a point Gondwe raised in the house that poverty levels had gone up in the country following the 48.8 % devaluation of the kwacha.

Gondwe said poverty levels had gone up from 38% to record levels following the devaluation.

“Allow me Mr. Speaker sir, to inform the honorable member that currently there are no figures on the extent poverty levels in the country. Government is compiling a report on this but also on other issues like unemployment rate for purposes of planning” said Muluzi.

However Muluzi said currently Malawi is yet to compile report which will reflect real figures on poverty levels.
