Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Chief Executive Officer, Daniel Yohannes is expected to meet President Joyce Banda on the implementation of the reinstated $350 million energy grant to Malawi.

Yohannes arrived in Malawi on Thursday.

The visit comes barely two weeks after the MCC board in Washington released $350 million energy grant for Malawi to revamp the power sector.

Over five million Malawians are expected to benefit from the energy grant.

The grant was put on hold for eight months due to poor governance and human rights record in the regime of former President Bingu wa Mutharika regime, who died on April 5 this year.

A statement from the US embassy Public Affairs Section in Lilongwe says “Johannes and President Banda will discuss on issues surrounding the compact and will on Friday hold a media briefing about his visit and discussions with the president.”

Representatives of the US government say they are committed to working with Malawi in implementing the grant carefully and timely to achieve its objectives of improving the power system infrastructure, strengthening power sector institutions and reducing poverty.

The US government has reiterated its commitment to continue supporting the government of Malawi in various developmental areas after being impressed with the reforms President Banda has made since taking over power after the death of president Bingu wa Mutharika.
