International security experts have hailed the role the Malawi Defence Force –MDF – on the role it is playing in efforts to stabilize the African continent.

Political and Military Officer at the US Embassy in Lilongwe Stephanie Reed made the remarks on the sidelines of a symposium to mark the launch of the Africa Center for Strategic Studies – ACSS.

“The MDF is a symbol of professionalism on the African continent, in terms of peace-keeping missions to war-torn countries,” said Ms Reed, “The ACSS will provide a forum for security experts to share notes and dialogue on the best practices.

“The establishment of the African Center for Strategic Studies-ACSS will provide a platform for security officers to share notes and dialogue on the changing trends in global security,” she added.

Ms. Reed added that the centre will enable military officials to collaborate with community members in examining complex and interrelated challenges in security.

Matt Hwangipo, chairperson of the Africa Centre for Strategic Studies also spoke highly of the MDF saying the Malawi military it is a symbol of professionalism, especially in the way the military handled the transition of power from late president Bingu wa Mutharika to president Joyce Banda.

Malawi Defense Forces have worked on peacekeeping missions in the DRC, Ivory Coast, Sudan and Rwanda.
