Drama is unfolding in the Nde’feyo stable as their entertainment company issued a press statement terminating singer Maskal’s contract without telling the musician.
But in an interview, Maskal said he finds it difficult to comment on the issue as he has not officially been communicated and is hearing it from the media.
“I find it unfair to learn of this issue from the media. I thought it was not professional,” he told the media before his performance at the All Star Concert at Blantyre Sports Club.
Maskal was signed on to Nde’feyo Entertainment as the label’s first artist before he went on to release his top-selling Nthawi whose lead single is the anthemic hit ‘Udalire’.
The news of the contract termination comes as Maskal is on the verge of dropping his second album Umunthu.
In a press release dated Sunday, August 5, 2012, Nde’feyo said they have parted ways with Maskal by mutual agreement.
“As a label, we are proud of what we have achieved together and we wish him well in his future endeavours . Nde ‘feyo will continue scouting and signing new talents to play our part in the development of music and arts in Malawi,” said the company.
One of Nde ‘feyo directors Khumbo Munthali denied that they had parted ways because there was bad blood between them and the musician.
“It’s just a business decision on our side and nothing personal,” he said.
Munthali said the label was proud to part ways with him in good faith and shape.
He said it was just a coincidence that they were parting ways with him just after the musician had announced that he was about to release his second album.
Munthali however, revealed that there were some things which they were not happy with as far as the executing of some of the his contractual obligations. “We tried to discuss but he opted to get out of the contract and we accepted,” he said.
But Maskal said he will comment when the time is right.
“Right now I have not been told anything by Nde’feyo so I cannot comment on the issue,” he said.
