Growing rivalry between candidates aspiring to represent the ruling people’s party in Mzimba Central Constituency by-elections has forced one of the aspirants Mr. Kandodo Mvula to stand as an independent candidate.

Mr. Mvula told a press conference in Mzuzu that he will stand as an independent candidate because the ground is not leveled for all the PP aspirants to play on an equal footing.

“Despite that I will stand as an independent candidate during the by-elections I am still a member of the PP,” he said.

The ruling party last Saturday cancelled its primaries in Mzimba Central where there was tension.
Eye witnesses told zodiak online the primary elections were characterized by protests and chaotic scenes because some senior ruling party officials were favoring one of the aspirants.

“Had it been that the ground was conducive I had no problems to stand on PP ticket,” said Mr. Mvula.

The Malawi Electoral Commission will hold the by-elections in Mzimba South and Central Constituencies on 9 October 2012.

Mzimba Central Constituency fell vacant following the death of Professor Donton Mkandawire’s while Mzimba South became vacant after Mr. Khumbo Kachali was appointed Malawi’s Vice President.
