President Joyce Banda held a high level meeting with opposition political parties’ leaders at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre on Monday over the Malawi and Tanzania lake border dispute, sources told Capital Radio.
The president also met the opposition political leaders in Lilongwe last month on the issue.
It comes against a background of another consultative meeting held between senior government officials from Malawi and Tanzania a week ago in Mzuzu and Lilongwe respectively..
Sources confided to capital fm that the President is soliciting input from the opposition on how best Malawi should move forward on the matter.
Tanzania is claiming part ownership of Lake Malawi, in the wake of a decision by the Malawi government to start oil exploration on the northern part of the Lake.
Lilongwe has engaged Sure stream of the United Kingdom to conduct studies on the lake.
Dodoma, however, is reported to have objections on the project claiming that part of the Lake Malawi belongs to Tanzania.
Meanwhile, another consultative meeting between senior government officials from Malawi and Tanzania on the issue is scheduled for September 13 to 15, 2012.
