Over 150 well qualified Malawians continue to be jobless simply because they have physical disabilities, the Malawi Council for the Handicapped MACOHA alleged on Tuesday, attributing the development to discrimination.
MACOHA Rehabilitation Officer Mr. Dennis Mpunga told the media that although such people meet requirements for specific jobs but no any institution is willing to recruit them due to discrimination.
“Most companies do not hire them because of discrimination. The institutions don’t even have a clue on what these people can contribute to their organizations,” said Mr. Mpunga.
“These people are skilled and well qualified, but they are struggling to get employment both in government and the private sector simply because they have physical disabilities.”
He said among them there are those who are well qualified in the fields of HIV and Aids management, Information Communication Technology, and Financial Accounting.
Statistics show that currently there are about 200 persons with disabilities employed both in government and the private sector but MACOHA says will keep on sensitizing the employers to consider employing more people with disabilities.
