Malawi today joins the rest of the world in commemorating the world habitat day.

The United Nations has designated the first Monday of October every year as World Habitat Day.

According to the United Nations this year’s idea of celebrating this day is to reflect on the state of towns and cities and the basic right of all, to adequate shelter.

It is also intended to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat.

This year’s theme is Changing Cities, Building Opportunities because cities are the engines of growth.

According to the UN Habitat the themes underscore the need to plan the cities better because as has also been stated, unplanned growth of cities lead to chaotic development and urban sprawl.
