Hell broke loose on Saturday at Bangwe in Blantyre after angry people pelted stones and burned chairs because President Joyce Banda did not distribute maize in time.

The pandemonium started immediately after the President left the venue following a decision by authorities not to distribute maize to the people that had come at the rally because it was dark.

This angered the people who later pelted stones and burnt chairs at the podium.

The police moved in to quell the tension and Southern Region police spokesperson Sub-Inspector Nicholas Gondwa confirmed that by Sunday they arrested one suspect.

It has become a habit by President Banda to be moving around the country distributing maize to the poor, an act that has attracted public condemnation.

“She did not become President to distributing. She can delegate this task and workout on policies that will bail out those affected by hunger not moving around with sacks of maize the whole President,” said consumer rights John Kapito in a recent interview.
