The Office of the President and Cabinet through the Ministry of Local Government has suspended Traditional Authority Chimombo of Nsanje from his office with immediate effect.
Deputy Minister of Local Government Augustine Mtendere, who delivered the suspension letter, said President Joyce Banda has made the decision on grounds that people’s concerns were still flocking to the OPC despite the T/A being warned against ill-treating his subjects.
According to the letter, the Chief whose real name is Stanford Mtukula will remain suspended until investigations into alleged misconduct are finalized.
It is alleged that the Chief has embezzled development resources, involved in corrupt practices and grabbing his subjects’ property including land and wives.
Mtendere told the Malawi News Agency that all duties of the chief would be handed over to the offices of the District Commissioner Rodney Simwaka and Paramount Chief Lundu.
The suspended chief has also received another letter of warning from the OPC following the alleged misconduct.
In reaction to the suspension, T/A Chimombo said he was not shaken, arguing that he would obtain a court injunction and appeal the matter after consulting his lawyer.
