Malawi President Joyce Banda has pardoned 279 prisoners as part of celebrations marking Christmas and the New Year.

The pardoned prisoners are those who have served at least half of their prison sentences with good behavior and were not convicted of serious offences, according to a statement from the ministry Home Affairs.

Pesident Banda also pardoned at 377 prisoners in July this year, as part of the country’s 48th Independence celebrations.
