Malawi police at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe on Wednesday arrested two Chinese nationals for attempting to smuggle foreign currency and ivory as they were about to leave for China.
Police Spokesperson Rhoda Manjolo said in total the two had close to 100,000 US dollars cash and about 130, 000 kwacha cash.
Mrs. Manjolo identified the two Chinese nationals as Mr. Bing Tang and Mr. Shinxin Wang who were working as engineers on the recently inaugurated Karonga/Chitipa road.
“Mr. Tan had US$24,000 and K86, 620 and pieces of ivory shaped as a walking stick while Mr. Wang had US$70, 026 and K46,480,” said Manjolo.
“We arrested the two as they were about to board Ethiopian Airways on their journey to China.”
