The Malawi Human Rights Commission has challenged the media to take a leading role in sensitizing people about the state of human rights in the country.

Commissioner Steve Mkoka said Malawi has produced a report on the state of human rights, but not many people are aware of such an exercise.

Mr. Mkoka said the media, as a major stakeholder in the implementation of human rights, should strive to publicize as much as possible, the steps that the country is taking, to let people enjoy their rights.

National chairperson for MISA Malawi Mr. Anthony Kasunda said there’s need for the media to be trained on the Universal Periodic Review-UPR which the MHRC wants publicized.

Malawi will in the next two years send a state of human rights report to the UN, which reviews the performance of nations in areas of human rights.
