A 50 year-old inmate was on Sunday found dead at Mzuzu prison in northern Malawi but authorities could not immediately establish what led to his death.

The inmate, Mr. Nebat Kasambara, was slapped with a nine year jail term in November 2012 for defilement.

A prison spokesperson for the north Austin Mwasangwale said what killed the inmate will be known after conducting a postmortem this week at Mzuzu Central hospital.

The inmate hailed from Traditional Authority Timbiri in Nkhatabay.
