Reports from the University of Malawi’s Chancellor College reveal that the lecturers are gearing for another strike which would see the college closed yet again.
Lecturers are disgruntled by government efforts to amend the University of Malawi Act in an effort for the ruling party to control the University.
The proposed amendment, which has been prepared by the Attorney General Anthony Kamanga, has faced strong opposition from academic staff such as the well known lawyer, Garton Kamchedzera.
Other lecturers fear that the proposed amendment will only lead to the appointment of government sympathizers and spies as deans and heads of departments; replacing the unionism which see faculty members electing Deans and Heads of Departments.
As the brain-drain awaits to hit the University of Malawi if Parliament passes the bill which has been constructed as retrogressive and undemocratic, reasons why Government is proposing the amendments remain unknown.
