President Joyce Banda has appointed Neurologist George Nga Ntafu as Chief Technical Advisor in the Ministry of Health replacing Dr. Marjorie Chaponda, wife to George Chaponda, former cabinet minister in the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

Dr. Majorie Chaponda was fired soon after president Joyce Banda took over the presidency, a move which George Chaponda described as political, in protesting.

Dr. Marjorie Chaponda, a Bachelor’s degree in surgery, a Masters degree in public health and vast medical experience having worked for the World Health Organisation in Geneva, UNDP in Warsaw Poland and UNAIDS in Addis Abba, Ethiopia. She also served as as board chairperson of Malawi College of Health Sciences.

Ntafu has been awarded barely few months after he dumped the former ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) to join the ruling People’s Party (PP).

Political commentators argue that Ntafu’s political career was soiled after his brief exclamation in Parliament: ‘Agalu inu!” (when he asking his colleagues, whom he labelled as dogs, to lend him an ear in a heated argument).
