At least 35 supporters of the ruling Peoples Party (PP) traveling from Namwera to attend the elevation of Senior Chief Mponda sustained various degrees of injuries, when a lorry they were traveling in overturned at Chowe hills in Mangochi district.

Witnesses say upon reaching the hills, the lorry, which had a South African number plate failed to negotiate a bend and consequently overturned.

President Joyce Banda, who officiated the elevation ceremony of Senior Chief   Mponda at his headquarters, paid tribute to the injured promising to assist them in getting better treatment.

She told the gathering that the victims had been rushed to Mangochi District Hospital to get treatment soon after the occurrence.

Said President Banda: “Following the incident, I asked the Vice President, Hon. Khumbo Kachali to check on the victims at the Hospital and as government we will do all we can to assist them.”

Meanwhile unconfirmed reports indicate that one of the accident victims died upon arrival at the Hospital.

Inside sources at the hospital indicated that the person who died was a woman.

The hospital has since discharged some of the victims who sustained minor injuries.
