Police in Lilongwe on Monday arrested two former Escom employees for allegedly being found illegally connecting electricity in Area 49.
One of the suspects John Chikopa, 33, had worked for the power utility company for three years while his accomplice, 30-yearold Amon Banda, worked for Escom for two years.
They both reside in Mtsiriza Township in the city. Lilongwe police spokesperson Ramsey Mushani disclosed that the law- enforcers are now hunting for another suspect Ken Banda who is at large.
Banda is believed to have recruited the other two suspects. Mushani could, however, not confirm whether the suspects are linked to a syndicate popularly known as Escom 2.
Escom 2 is a group of former Escom employees who illegally connects power to houses within central region districts. Reports say the group connives with serving Escom employees in their deals and uses Escom branded vehicles, uniforms and official documents in their operations. – By Ntchindi Meki
