A private jet from South Africa crashed in Malawi’s central region district of Dedza on Tuesday- about 71 kilometers to the capital Lilongwe.

The plane – said to be belonging to Martins – had technical problems and that the pilot was trying to make an emergency landing at a nearby airport.

Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) spokesman in Lilongwe, Peter Botha confirmed about the jet crash.

“It is true there has been a jet crash in Dedza,” said Botha. “An engine developed a fault.”

He however said there were two passengers in the plane, a pilot and another passenger.

Botha said the plane crashed at Dzalanyama Forest and that the two who were in the plan were evacuated to Kamuzu Central Hospital for treatment in Lilongwe.

They remain in “fair” condition, hospital source said.

The plane – a Cessna – was travelling from Mozambique to Tanzania.
