Malawi’s controversial dancehall queen, Wendy Harawa, has become the newest musician to join the country’s political ranks.
The renowned female artiste has joined the governing Peoples Party (PP) and was officially unveiled and presented to its leader Joyce Banda by the party’s Deputy Treasurer General, Yusuf Matumula, during the launch of the K100 million Joyce Banda Foundation International Inter-Constituency Football and Netball Trophies at Mzuzu Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Matumula, who is the organising committee chairman of the newly launched inter-constituency trophies, told the gathering the sexy dancer and singer has decided to join the ruling elite after realising she could not be accommodated if she had joined other parties.
“Today, the party has found a guest who after scrutinizing all the parties, has come to appreciate that she can only be supported if she joins the Peoples Party.
“Allow Wendy Harawa to greet you, your Excellency, so that you welcome her into the party and we work with her,” said Matumula, a Member of Parliament for Mangochi South who defected from the former ruling United Democratic Front (UDF).
Matumula, a businessman-cum-politician, was chairman of Big Bullets for some years during the time the team swept almost every silverware on the land.
In a brief telephone interview with Nyasa Times, the Wendy who has worked with several musicians both locally and internationally said time had come for her to serve the ruling party.
“I have decided to join the Peoples Party (PP) because I believe it’s the only party with ideals I can support,” she said.
Asked if she has quit the musical stage Harawa only said: “No ways, I am an artist and music is part of my life.”
The sexy Malawian dancehall queen also declined harbouring any ambitions for position in the party as well as parliamentary seat at the moment.
Already a number of musicians have declared their intentions to contest for parliamentary seats in their areas during next year’s polls while several others are also serving as parliamentarians for various political parties.
The pretty Harawa, undeniably one of the country’s talented female musicians with an amazing voice, is however never shot of controversies as she has time and again been found on the wrong side of the law.
