Presidential aspirant and former lecturer of the University of Malawi, Zumani Banda, is on remand at Maula prison for allegedly authoring a seditious letter that asked for the resignation of Joyce Banda.
Zumani Banda, President for the Moto Revolution Movement (MRM), which also gave a tough time, albeit in the distant background, to the regime of late Bingu wa Mutharika was arrested on September 5 in Lilongwe and was kept at Area 3 Police station before being moved to Maula prison over the weekend.
Surprisingly, his arrest has not been pursued by the human rights defenders who were critical of the Mutharika regime for arbitrary arrests over people who criticized him.
The arrest of Zumani Banda follows another arrest of a man who was arrested in the Northern region for calling President Banda stupid before sentenced to a fine of MK 15,000.00 by the courts.
Quarters have called for the scrapping off of the laws that limit the freedom of expression of which Zumani Banda has been charged for.
