The pair were struck by a Switcher locomotive on early Saturday morning in Ukraine, UPI reports local police as stating.
It cites a written statement from the Ukraine Interior Ministry which says the man told police in Zaporozhye they had “failed to overcome their natural passion when walking home … and wanted to experience an extreme sensation near the railroad tracks.”
RIA Novosti said the ministry did not release the victims’ names, saying only that the man was 41 and his companion was “thirty-something.”
The couple were believed to be drunk at the time, Yahoo! News reports a police spokesman as saying.
Police have opened a criminal probe over a potential safety violation, IBTimes reports.
In 2008 a couple having sex on train tracks in South Africa were killed by a freight train.
The train driver saw the couple from a distance and repeatedly hooted “but they continued with their business”, Superintendent Abie Khoabane told South African newspaper, Sowetan.
