Opposition Democratic Progressive Party has gone on a trail of using maize as a campaign tool in the face of a looming hunger that is threatening to put the lives of some Malawians at a risk.

Speaking in the Northern region where the party candidate has been having a series of whistle stop tours, the party members including former finance minister Goodall Gondwe and the President himself have run amok hitting at PP for the hunger that is threatening most Malawians.

Gondwe said at a rally in Mzimba that it was unfathomable for Malawi to be experiencing food shortage when in the reign of late Mutharika there was food security in the country such that mlawi had to export some to its neighbours.

Speaking days later at Dwangwa, a party official faulted the PP government for just prioritizing the Safe Motherhood Initiative that has been at the heart of President Banda and ignoring other important aspects of development.

“They tell you of Safe Motherhood without telling you of food; tell me, after delivery will the woman go back human and feed on locks, will the child be prepared a porridge of locks as he grows?” wondered the official, mocking the Peoples’ Party symbol of a lock.

Mutharika is expected to be wrapping up his visit of the Northern region this week.

Meanwhile, UDF President on Monday begins his tour of the Northern region in a development that others have labeled as an attempt by the younger Muluzi to erase the footprints of Mutharika who has been in the region for a week.

According to UDF party officials, before launching his heavy attack on the Northern region, Muluzi will have a stopover at Ntcheu to garner some support in the Central region.
