The annual cultural festivities of the Lhomwe tribe, Mulhako wa Alhomwe, took a new turn yesterday when they were hijacked by the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) which considers its seat to be in the Lhomwe belt.

Despite the event being national and apparently open to all political parties, the festivities got its own ugly sides as celebrants to the festival started singing songs that hailed the DPP torchbearer for the 2014 elections, Peter Mutharika, who is also a Lhomwe by tribe.

When Bon Kalindo aka Winiko took to the stage to perform some comedy, it was when it was discovered that the event was slanting towards politics when he insinuated of the DPP candidate getting the hot seat.

Aside that, party stalwarts were given a VIP treatment at their arrival at the scene with the crowds cheering them on as they made entry into the premises of Mulhakho headquarters.

At the same event, the DPP candidate found the opportunity to unveil his fiancée, Member of Parliament for Balaka North, Gertrude Maseko, putting to a rest much speculation on his marital status and relationship status.

Mutharika was seen taking to the dance floor with the parliamentarian at the event before Maseko was later given a VIP treatment as they left the venue with her car being third in the procession that led Mutharika away from the Chonde grounds.
