Firebrand evangelist and Minister of Information, Brown James Mpinganjira, has made himself a laughing stock amongst people in the social circles after alleging that it was late President Bingu wa Mutharika who fired former Director General of the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), Bright Malopa, and replaced him with Dr. Benson Tembo.
According to media reports, Mpinganjira has been quoted as saying that Bingu was the one who fired Malopa and President Banda just effected the change. However, this raises doubts as President Banda and her predecessor were in a cat and rat relationship at the time of the latter’s death.
Mpinganjira was apparently reacting to the news that the Industrial Relations Court had ordered government to pay Malopa a sum of close to MK 70 million for unfair dismissal after being fired from his post as the DG of the state broadcaster.
“It was Bingu himself who did that firing and it’s strange that the blame is being pushed on this government,” said the born-again minister of information.
However, Malopa laughed off the claims saying it was fiction that Bingu could do that as he died on the 5th of April while his firing was done on the 12th of April, seven days later.
“Unless he says Bingu rose from the dead, fired me, then died again then that will hold,” Malopa has been quoted as saying.
