Bail has been denied for former minister of justice in the President Joyce Banda regime, Raphael Kasambara, in a case in which he is being accused of money laundering.
Appearing before Judge Esmy Chombo this morning, Kasambara pleaded not guilty to the charges leveled against him. He further applied for a bail. However, his bail application was turned down and the judge said that Kasambara should remain in custody until Friday, January 31, when the court will make a ruling on his bail application.
Kasambara is being accused of assisting a client to purchase a house in Area 47 at MK 55 million through dubious means.
President Banda, earlier this year, implied that she will see to it that Kasambara rots in jail. Her remarks were also echoed by the justice minister, Fahad Assani, who when speaking to a local radio station said that he did not care whether Kasambara was educated, clever, or what but he would pin him down.
Kasambara is being represented by his long time ally, Wapona Kita, among other lawyers.
