Spokesperson for the Peoples’ Party (PP), Hophmally Makande, has dismissed as ‘madness’ claims by Paul Mphwiyo that he was one of the people pressuring him (Mphwiyo) to make dubious payments in the infamous Cashgate scandal.
Media reports have indicated in a sworn affidavit that Mphwiyo confessed that he was receiving threats from some government officials including the PP spokesperson and Minister of Justice then, Ralph Kasambara, to make payments into some accounts over jobs not done.
He disclosed that it was the current minister of information, Brown Mpinganjira, who warned him that Makande and Kasambara were not happy with the way he was conducting his business and would wipe him off the face of the earth in ten days if he was not going to comply with their demands.
However, in reacting to the news, Makande has described it as ‘madness’ the accusations being leveled against him by Mphwiyo claiming he is not a civil servant for him to have been pressuring Mphwiyo.
The case of the shooting of Paul Mphwiyo enters in the courts tomorrow in which Ralph Kasambara is being accused of being its masterminder.
Paul Mphwiyo, an ex-budget director in the ministry of finance, was shot on September 13, 2013 in Lilongwe. His shooting heralded what is now referred to as the Cashgate scandal.
