Today, Peter Mutharika appeared at COMESA hall with former Airtel CEO, Saulos Chilima, as his running mate. The decision might have surprised some in the old days but with the recent rumours it has surprised a few. But, who really is Saulos Chilima?
Chilima is a Ngoni from Ntcheu District, married to Mary and together they have two Children. He is a devout Catholic with leadership Positions within the church.
He holds a Master’s degree in Economics and is currently reading towards a PhD in Business Management with the University of Bolton.
Chilima is the first Malawian to head Airtel, the leading mobile telecommunications company in Malawi.
Before venturing in telecommunications, Chilima held Senior Sales Marketing position in Banking and the fast moving consumer goods sector namely the Leasing and Finance Company, Unilever Malawi, Coca cola and Carlsberg.
Politics is not new to him as he is one of the Youths who played a pivotal role in Championing Mult- party democracy when he was president of Student at Chancellor College.
Now chosen as Democratic Progressive Party running mate, it is yet to be seen what change he will bring to the political front and the party specifically.
