It never rains but pours on minority groups in the country. Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) are calling for homosexuals to be given death sentence.

This suggestion comes at a time as some Civil Society Organization (CSO) are pushing for the country to abolish the statute that penalize the act. Currently the maximum sentence for those found guilty by the Court over homosexual acts is 14 years.

Secretary General of the Muslims body, Dr Salmin Omar Idrussi, is advancing that homosexuality should remain criminalized and the maximum jail term should be  pegged at death.

“Although Malawi is regarded as secular state, the country is blessed with God fearing citizens who can’t afford to deviate from God’s commandments for the sake of pleasing others who practice the act”, Idrussi is quoted as saying on the official website of the organization.

Idrussi argues that Capital punishment is the only way to get rid off society of homosexuality.

He said Muslims condemn sinful behaviour in society and would want a death penalty clause in the Laws for homosexuality.

Of late, christian churches called for the government to call for a referendum for Malawians to make a choice on the matter.
