The fate of the former budget director in the ministry of finance, Paul Mphwiyo, will be known at the end of next month, government has disclosed.

The minister of justice, Fahad Assani, said this yesterday at a Public Affairs Committee (PAC) all stakeholders conference in the commercial capital city of Blantyre yesterday.

According to Assani, government will properly scrutinize the role of the former budget director in the Cashgate scandal and, thereafter, pass a verdict on him.

The minister had been pressurized into making a statement on the issue by the delegates to the conference.

After the shooting of Paul Mphwiyo, state President Joyce Banda said that she knew who had shot Mphwiyo and she went further to allege that Mphiwyo had been shot because he was joining her in a fight against corruption. However, some media reports suggested otherwise and with the release of the forensic audit report, Mphwiyo has had himself mentioned not on the list of corruption fighters but supporters.

Meanwhile, former justice minister along with four other people are being accused to have been behind the shooting of Mphiwyo who was shot on September 13 and his shooting opened a can of worms of the looting that was happening at the Capitol hill, a scandal that has come to be known as the Cashgate.
