The Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry MCCCI believes government erred by not disclosing the transactions that were involved in the proceeds of the presidential Jet.

The private sector’s concern comes at a time government is being condemned for mismanagement of the Jet proceeds –as claims are that the money did not reach the reserve bank as required by procedure.

Government through minister of Information Brown Mpinganjira said it used the Jet money for the purchase of equally important requirements such as Maize and drugs.

However, Mpinganjira said government is not ready to show the public the receipts or any proof of payments to suppliers of the said purchases –thereby leaving several sectors unsatisfied.

Speaking in an interview, President of MCCCI Matthews Chikankheni said government would have silenced the doubters had it came forward with the breakdown.

“To us, it is an easy and straight forward task for government to handle the issue in a rightful and convincing manner.

“We are therefore forced to speculate that there were some irregularities in the process.” Chikankheni said.

According to Mpinganjira, government found it viable to bypass other steps when the Jet money came –because the cabinet had already endorsed the decision to use it to purchase maize.
