Malawi Congress Party spokesperson, Jessie Kabwila, has been barred by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) from standing as a parliamentarian on the party’s ticket in Salima North West constituency, FaceofMalawi understands.
Though MEC has not disclosed the reasons for barring Kabwila, it has been alleged that it is because of her being in the University system which is deemed as a public office.
Last week, MEC barred Umodzi Party presidential candidate, John Chisi, on the same grounds that he holds a public office. Chisi is still challenging the decision and the outcome is yet to be known.
Kabwila who is a lecturer with the University of Malawi, Chancellor College, was appointed as the party spokesperson last year.
