Outspoken Malawi Congress Party (MCP) spokesperson, Jessie Kabwila, who has been barred by Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) from contesting in the May polls has indicated that she is going to challenge the commission’s decision in a court of law.

Speaking to a local radio station, Kabwila indicated that she had just seen on the press release that her name was missing on the list but never knew the reason why and, therefore, she was going to contest the decision in a court of law.

When put to her that she had been barred for holding a public office, Kabwila still maintained her stand that she was going to contest that decision in court and she refused to shed more light on the issue.

Meanwhile, the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has confirmed that Kabwila has been barred for being a holder of a public office. According to a spokesperson of the commission, Sangwani Mwafulirwa, Kabwila has been barred on the same grounds as those that were used against John Chisi of Umodzi Party.

Jessie Kabwila is a lecturer with the University of Malawi, Chancellor College, who is on a sabbatical leave.
