The Malawi Police Service has indicated that there are no fine options for all cases that are involving the electoral process.

According to the Southern region police spokesperson, Nicholas Gondwa, all cases that are relating to elections that are to take place in a few hours from now will be referred to the courts where the minimum sentence is three years.

“There is no option for a fine and therefore it is just good that some of these things be avoided,” said Gondwa.

Some of the things that Gondwa cited as criminal activities that are prosecutable under the electoral laws included the wearing of party colours to the polling stations, campaigning at the polling centers among others.

Election fever has gripped the country as hours remain for the country to get involved in the first ever tripartite polls.
