Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has disclosed that the decision taken by commissioners to recount the votes will cost the body about K1.7 billion.

MEC Chief Election Officer Willie Kalonga said this in an interview with one of the local daily papers in the country on Monday.

The body also disclosed that it has exhausted all its budget of K18 billion meant for this year’s election.

In his speech, he said MEC will extend the begging bowl to government to finance the exercise.

“We are going to approach government to help us with money for the recounting. We have budgeted for the exercise at K1.7 billion. Recounting is not a cheap exercise”, he said.

MEC resorted to vote recount after massive irregularities that were discovered in some polling centres.

Meanwhile it is not yet known if the vote recount will take place.
