Malawian sharp-shooter Mwai Kumwenda has re-signed with the EasiYo Tactix for the 2015 ANZ Championship season.

The 1.83-metre tall goal shooter has impressed this season with her dynamic and flamboyant style of netball, recording shooting statistics rivalling the top in the league.

EasiYo Tactix CEO Brigit Hearn says she’s thrilled to have retained the services of Kumwenda for next season.

“She is a huge asset to the Tactix and is really starting to form great combinations within the team, especially with captain and goal attack Anna Thompson,” she said.

“Although we haven’t come up with the winning results this year, we are heading in the right direction, playing quality netball on court that we can be proud of.

“Mwai is a fabulous player, with a great skill set and wonderful personality, who has adapted well to life here and we look forward to seeing her netball skills continue to grow and thrive here in the Netball Mainland environment,” Hearn said.

Kumwenda is a trailblazer for her country, becoming the first Malawi player to feature in ANZ Championship, having been spotted by the EasiYo Tactix management, playing in the Australian national league in 2013. The franchise has been well rewarded for showing faith in her, having been previously untested in the ANZ Championship.

Kumwenda has settled well in Christchurch and is relishing the chance to return for another season.

“I love it in Christchurch and am blessed to have the opportunity to play ANZ Championship netball with great team mates and the chance to train in a supportive environment,” she said.

“I have a wonderful host family, and it was a very easy decision to come back to my ‘Mainland home’ next season.  Thank you to everyone for making me feel so welcome.”

Tactix coach Leigh Gibbs too, has been impressed with how Kumwenda has adjusted to the different style of netball played in this part of the world.

“Mwai’s range of skills, great attitude and commitment to netball are outstanding and she’s shown that she is truly a world class shooter.”

Kumwenda is currently shooting at 91.5 percent accuracy to be amongst the top four in the ANZ Championship in her first season and has the highest shooting statistics in the league after 13 rounds, averaging almost 42 goals per match.
