President of Namibia Hifikepunye Pohamba who is the Chairperson of the  SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Corporation has commended political leaders and the people of Malawi for maintaining peace and serenity and for scrupulously upholding the laws of the country despite enormous irregularities that have marred the May 20 tripartite election.

He said this through a Press Statement released today aiming at giving update on the country’s tripartite election.

. “The Chairperson of the Organ fervently urges the political leaders of Malawi to remain calm and continue to prevail on their supporters to refrain from all and any form of agitation or engage in acts of violence. The Chairperson calls on the people of Malawi to continue to exercise patience and restraint until the process of counting and tallying of the votes is completed.

“All electoral challenges and legitimate complaints with respect to the ongoing tallying process should be carried out in conformity with the laws of Malawi, and within the spirit of the Lilongwe Peace Declaration of 10 May 2014 on peaceful elections which was signed by all Presidential candidates in the presence of inter-faith leaders of Malawi. The democratic right of the people of Malawi to elect leaders of their own choice must remain sacrosanct and be respected by all”, reads the statement in part.

Meanwhile MEC is set to release the much awaited results of the first ever tripartite election tomorrow Friday.
