The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) has come out of the cocoon and set its record straight that it did not declare Malawi’s first ever tripartite election free, fair and credible in the preliminary report.

The EU EOM said this in a statement issued by Silvia de Félix, to the media reacting to stories carried by several media house saying ‘EU declares Malawi’s election free, fair and credible’.

“The Chief Observer clearly stressed, in the beginning and at the end of her speech, that, the EU EOM is currently observing this process and will only be in a position to present its final assessment once the elections are concluded,”

“We are currently in the beginning of the third phase of the electoral process, the tabulation of results, and this remains to be assessed,” reads the statement.

Meanwhile Malawi Electoral Commission(MEC) Chairperson Maxon Mbendera yesterday declared the election free, fair and credible.
