A number of organizations, Governments and institutions offer financial opportunities and scholarship awards for students from different part of the world to study abroad. The financial awards are offered for either undergraduate or postgraduate students or both; for African students particularly, for developing countries or international students generally. However students from Africa are as eligible to apply as any other candidate and stand better or equal chances of being awarded a scholarship.

Below is a long list of Scholarships for African students offered annually to study abroad. These scholarships are offered annually at the time of publishing this list. If the deadline has passed, you can take note of them for future application.

MasterCard Foundation Scholarships for 15,000 Africans

The MasterCard Foundation is partnering with over 10 recognized universities and higher institutions around the world to offer the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program, a $500 million education initiative that will provide talented yet economically disadvantaged students from developing countries, particularly from Africa,– with comprehensive support for secondary and university education. The scholarship will be offered to 15,000 African Students for a period of 10years.

1. Commonwealth Scholarship

Each year, the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission invites each nominating agency, university or university body to forward a specific number of nominations for the commonwealth scholarship for developing countries. Each nominating agency/university/university body is responsible for its own selection process, and in most cases they will set a closing date in the months preceding the CSC’s deadline for nominations. Approximately 200-230 scholarships are awarded each year.

2. OFID Scholarship Award

Each year the OFID (The OPEC Fund for International Development) calls for application for qualified undergraduate students prospecting to pursue masters degree to apply for the OFID Scholarship. The OFID Scholarship is awarded to support an undergraduate student from any developing country, to pursue higher education in a relevant field of development, in any recognized university/college in the world. 3. Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) for African Students

The Australia Awards for Africa is an initiative of the Australian Government aimed to maximize the benefit of the Australian Government’s extensive scholarship programs, and to support enduring ties between Australia and neighboring African Countries. Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) are available for full-time Postgraduate Diploma or Master Degree studies for African Nationals at Australian universities. 4. Commonwealth Shared Scholarship

Commonwealth Shared Scholarships are a joint initiative between the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (with funding from DFID) and UK universities, to support scholarships for students from developing Commonwealth countries who would not otherwise be able to study in the UK. Since establishment in 1959, 27,000 individuals have benefited, with 120 to 150 awards every year. Scholarships are open to Commonwealth citizens. Awards are for postgraduate study (Masters and PhD).

Nominations from agencies must be received in London by 31 December in the year preceding the award.

5. 200 Swedish Institute Study Scholarships for Developing Countries

Swedish Institute Study Scholarships for 12 Developing Countries to study for Undergraduate and Master’s degree programme. The scholarship covers both the tuition fee and living expenses to the amount of SEK8,000 (€878.9799) per month. Scholarship holders within the SI Study Scholarships will receive a travel grant in connection with the scholarship. The travel grant is a lump sum of SEK 10.000.(€ 1098.7249)

6. UCL/ AET Undergraduate International Outreach Bursaries UK

University College London (UCL) and the Africa Educational Trust (AET) have agreed to collaborate in a scheme to enable students from Africa, who are financially unable to study in the UK, to pursue full-time undergraduate studies at UCL. Two full bursaries are available annually. Each bursary consists of full tuition fees and a maintenance allowance for the duration of the student’s programme of study, as well as economy air travel to/from the UK at the beginning and end of the bursary-holder’s degree programme.

7. Italy- UCSC Scholarship for African Students

UCSC, Italy offer 12 full Masters scholarships that include tuition and board for students from eligible African countries. 12 full tuition and 39 partial scholarships will be awarded. The full scholarships include tuition and board for the duration of the program. Candidates that do not qualify for the full scholarship may be selected for the partial scholarships that cover part of tuition, whereas all other living costs and travel will be at the expense of the student.

8. VLIR- UOS Masters Scholarships in Belgium for Developing Countries

VLIR-UOS awards scholarships to students from developing countries to study for a master or training programme in Flanders, Belgium. 180 Masters & 70 training Scholarships in Belgium will be awarded for students from Developing countries in 2012 (50% of African students and almost 50% for Women). 10. Reach Oxford Scholarships for Undergraduate Students for Developing Countries, University of Oxford

A number of Oxford colleges offer Reach Oxford scholarships (formerly Oxford Student Scholarships) to students from developing countries who, for political or financial reasons, or because standard educational facilities do not exist, cannot study for a degree in their own countries. Scholarship winners will study at Oxford University, UK under any undergraduate course of study, except Medicine due to the course length and expense. The scholarship covers University and college fees, full grant for living expenses, return flight to the UK at the start and end of the course per year.

11. Loughborough University Graduate School Development Trust Africa Scholarships: Full-fee Scholarships

Loughborough University, UK offers full-fee scholarships for international full-time taught postgraduate students who are currently domiciled (permanently living) in Africa, through The Loughborough University Graduate School Development Trust Africa Scholarships. The scholarships will cover 100% of the course fees for your chosen postgraduate taught course for one year (replacing any Departmental or Loughborough University scholarships or bursaries you may already have been awarded).

12. 150 CUD Scholarships Program in Belgium for Developing Countries

Within the programme for international courses and training programmes, Commission universitaire pour le Développement (CUD) grants 150 scholarships for participation into the courses and 70 for participation into the training programmes. Only applicants originating in developing countries mention, qualify for selection. To be eligible, candidates must reside and work in their country at the time of the introduction of the file.

DAAD Scholarship Programmes have benefited hundreds of African students since inception. The scholarships are awarded each year to postgraduate students wishing to study for a Master’s or PhD degree. 14. Quota Scholarship Scheme in Norway for Bachelors, Masters and PhD Students from Developing Countries By Norwegian Government

The main objective of the Norwegian Quota Scholarship Scheme for developing countries is to contribute to capacity building through education that will benefit the home country of the students when they return. Most universities and university colleges in Norway participate in the Quota scheme. Most of the programmes offered are at Master’s or PhD level, but the Quota Scheme also offers certain Bachelor’s study programmes. Each student receives the same amount of money as a Norwegian student would do in an equivalent educational programme.

15. Taiwan Government International Scholarship Programme

The Government of Taiwan through the Ministry of Education (MOE) has established the Taiwan Scholarship Program for foreign students (Undergraduate and Postgraduate) in an effort to encourage outstanding international students to undertake degree studies in Taiwan so as to familiarize themselves with the academic environment in Taiwan and promote communication, understanding and friendship between Taiwan and countries around the world. 19. Africa LLM/MSc Tercentenary Scholarship at University of Edinburgh, UK

The Africa LLM/MSc Tercentenary Scholarship is open to all African students (with preference to West Africa) who have applied to an on-campus LLM or the on-campus MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice at Edinburgh Law School. The scholarship will cover the costs of postgraduate tuition fees for one academic year. The successful applicant will also be given a partial maintenance grant (£6500) to help fund their studies at the University of Edinburgh.

20. Wolfson Full Postgraduate Scholarships in the Humanities- University of Oxford

The Wolfson Foundation seek to support excellence through the Wolfson Postgraduate Scholarships in Humanities for international students at University of Oxford. 23. Sydney Achievers International Scholarships in Australia – For Undergraduate and Postgraduate

25. Julius Nyerere Master’s Scholarships for Tanzanian Students at University of Edinburgh

The University of Edinburgh offers three Julius Nyerere Master’s scholarships to students from Tanzania for postgraduate Master’s study in any subject offered by the University. 26. UK- Loughborough University Graduate School International Scholarships

Loughborough University offers over 100 postgraduate scholarships taught programme for the 2011/2012 academic year, to new self-financing full-time international students who are permanently resident in a country outside the European Union (EU). 27. Sustainable Energy Development [ESED] Masters Scholarship for Developing Countries

The purpose of the Education for Sustainable Energy Development [ESED] scholarship is to support outstanding students from developing countries pursuing advanced studies in sustainable energy development and to encourage meaningful contributions to the collective body of knowledge about this subject. These scholarships are available to up to 10 outstanding students from developing countries and economies in transition, for a period of up to two years for Masters Degree, awarded annually. Scholarships of US$ 23,000 per year for up to two years are offered for Masters level students.

32. West Africa Scholarship Scheme at Durham University, UK

The Durham University will be awarding three postgraduate scholarships to outstanding candidates from West Africa- Benin, Cameroon, Gambia, Ghana, Nigeria and Togo. 36. Oppenheimer Fund scholarships for South African Students at University of Oxford

The Oppenheimer Fund Scholarships are open to applicants who are ordinarily resident in South Africa applying to start any new degree bearing course, with the exception of PGCert and PGDip courses, at the University of Oxford. Through the generosity of the Allan and Nesta Ferguson Charitable trust, three Ferguson scholarships have been established for African Students (African nationals and resident in Africa), who wish to undertake a taught masters course at SOAS. 42. UK- Waverley Fund Full Masters Scholarship in African Studies

The Waverley Fund awards scholarship for Masters (MSc) in African Studies to academically excellent students from disadvantaged backgrounds who have shown the potential to make a significant contribution in their future careers. The Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund– MMMF provides grants to women from developing countries to help further their education and strengthen their leadership skills to improve the lives of women and children in developing countries. The African Presidential Scholars Program offers early career faculty from Ghana, Liberia, South Africa and Uganda the opportunity to collaborate with faculty and students at the University of Michigan USA during residencies of two to six months Uganda in the field of African Heritage, African Social Research, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics). 54. Leadership and Advocacy for Women in Africa- LAWA Fellowship Program

The Leadership and Advocacy for Women in Africa (LAWA) Fellowship Program was founded in 1993 at the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., in order to train women’s human rights lawyers from Africa who are committed to returning home to their countries in order to advance the status of women and girls in their own countries throughout their careers. Over 50 women’s human rights advocates from Botswana, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe have participated in the LAWA Program, and we hope to include Fellows from additional countries in the future. The LAWA Fellowship provides the tuition for the Foundations of American Law and Legal Education Course (a U.S. $2,200 benefit) and for the LL.M. degree (a U.S. $42,065 benefit) at the Georgetown University Law Center, as well as professional development training.

Chalmers University of Technology will grant over 40 scholarships (in 2012) funded by the Chalmers foundation, to all citizens from non-EU/EEA countries who are liable to pay tuition fees for Swedish university education for advance Level and Masters Programme. The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), as part of its programme to support member States, is partnering with the Mo Ibrahim Foundation to promote leadership development through a practical and on-the-job fellowship. The Fellowship Programme for People of African Descent provides participants with an intensive learning opportunity to deepen their understanding of the United Nations human rights system, instruments and mechanisms, with a focus on issues of particular relevance to people of African descent. 71. Mansion House Masters Scholarship for African Students

The roots of the Mansion House Scholarship Scheme can be traced back to 1997, when Sir Richard Nichols, then Lord Mayor in the City of London, was particularly impressed during his overseas visits by the high regard in which the City is held by foreign business communities and by the number of students who wished to study in the UK in schools and colleges through business attachments, executive exchanges, and management training. Now firmly established, the Scheme supports the funding of students from overseas taking Masters level degree courses at British Universities or to enable business trainees or officials to undertake study or training in financial and related business activities. 72. TWAS Postgraduate Research Grants in Basic Sciences for Developing Countries

Under the TWAS Research Grants Programme in Basic Sciences, research grants are awarded to high-level promising research projects in biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics carried out by either individual scientists or research in Africa and developing countries, to enable them to purchase the research facilities they need to enhance their productivity. 74. Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Scholarship Programme Netherlands

The MENA Scholarship Programme enables mid career professionals from Algeria, Iraq, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Syria and Tunisia to undertake a short course in the Netherlands. Each year there are around 120 scholarships available, which are proportionally distributed among the participating countries. Ideally, half of the scholarships are allocated to female applicants. 81. Chevening Scholarship

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office Chevening Scholarship programme was established in 1983 and is now an internationally prestigious scheme with over 41,000 alumni. In 2011-12 there were over 700 Chevening Scholars studying at universities across the UK. Chevening Scholarships are currently offered in approximately 110 countries. Chevening awards enable Scholars to study a one-year postgraduate Master’s course in any discipline at any UK university.
