A 13-year-old boy in Rumphi District is reported dead after  hanging himself  on Monday after quarreling with his father who sold off tobacco suckers the boy had collected.

The incident occurred at Chikazinga Village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Chikulamayembe in Rumphi.

Rumphi Police spokesperson Victor Khamisi confirmed of the development and identified the deceased as Luka Phiri from Simoni Village in the area of TA Chikowi in Zomba District.

Khamisi said the deceased was staying with his parents who were working as tobacco tenants. After the parents had finished harvesting tobacco the boy collected the tobacco suckers which he wanted to sell later.

“But the father sold off the suckers at K1, 000, a development which angered his son who refused to take food and quarreled with his father over the matter”, lamented Khamisi.

Two days later Phiri was hanged himself in a near by tree with a weather coat.

Postmortem results showed that the deceased died of strangulation.
