The newly sworn-in Members of Parliament will today select Speaker of Parliament and his/her deputy in a meeting scheduled to be convened today afternoon at Parliament building in Lilongwe.

Several political parties have lined up their candidate for this post. For instance Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has elected the party Vice President Richard Msowoya.

Former ruling People’s Party (PP) Acting Spokesperson  Ken Msonda said the party will select and support the candidate who will be fair, credible and impartial to all political parties in the August house regardless of the political party which the candidate is coming from.

On the part of United Democratic Front (UDF) Spokesperson Ken Ndanga said the party will not feature any Candidate at the post of speaker but he said the party will support any candidate who will be voted for the position.

When approached for comment, Democratic Progress Party (DPP) officials denied to comment anything, saying they are doing consultation on the matter.

Meanwhile Non-governmental Organization are appealing for the selection of a women in the post of Speaker.
