The newly elected Speaker of Parliament Mr. Richard Msowoya has vowed to uphold the constitution of the land during the time he will be in office.
Msowoya said this on Monday in his acceptance speech after being elected as new speaker of parliament.
“I would like to assure all Malawians under my speakership coming from background of Malawi Congress Party that observe the rule of law. I will ensure the laws of Malawi, the Constitution of Malawi is followed,” said Msowoya.
On his part, the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Henry Mussa congratulated Msowoya and pledged a total support.
People’s Party (PP) Uladi Mussa also joined DPP in congratulating Msowoya and said the party is confident with him.
Msowoya outclassed DPP proposed candidate Mr. Francis Kasaila by 101 votes to 89.
In a related development, Former Deputy Speaker Esther Mcheka Chilenje Nkhoma was elected unopposed as First Deputy Speaker after Francis Kasaila and Peoples Party’s Elias Wakuda Kamanga pulled out of the contest.
United Democratic Front’s Clement Chiwaya is the new Second Deputy Speaker after defeating Wakuda Kamanga.
Meanwhile the Parliament will continue with its business today where the President is expected to make the State of the nation address this morning.
