There was drama at Parliament today as Members of Parliament failed to start deliberations on the State of the Nation Address made yesterday by President Mutharika due to the absence of Cabinet and business committee of the house.

Opposition unanimously  blasted the debate saying, debate cannot start because “there was no executive”.

The first one to speak on the matter  was former ruling People’s Party (PP) MP Uladi Mussa who vehemently said the house cannot proceed with business with absence of cabinet and business committee.

Concurring with Mussa’s remarks was Malawi Congress Party (MCP) spokesperson Jessie Kabwila who said: “Our crisis is deeper than this. We have no government.”

She added: “We don’t have government. The government is busy planning wedding [President Mutharika and Gertrude Maseko]. They should give us a cabinet not a wedding.”

But speaking on behalf of government, Dr George Chaponda said Parliament has leadership, citing Leader of Opposition, MCP president Lazarous Chakwera, other party leaders and himself for government.

The development forced the speaker to suspend the house inorder for him to meet with leaders of political parties to map the way forward.

Meanwhile it is not yet known as to when the President will name the proposed 20 cabinet.
