As Parliamentarians have entered the second week of deliberations at Parliament building in Lilongwe, Commentators have asked Speaker of National Assembly Richard Msowoya to voluntarily step down as Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Vice President to enable him discharge his duties with impartiality.
The call comes barely days after MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila hinted that Msowoya will double the position.
“Despite being elected Speaker, he will continue serving in the party as Vice President. Why are people very concerned with that?
The previous Speaker contested during the DPP convention and nobody asked him to resign, why should Hon Msowoya resign?” Kabwila was quoted as saying during Tiuzeni Zoona Program aired at Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) on Sunday.
“There is no law that disallows one to double the positions, but the previous Speaker set the precedent by resigning as Secretary General of the Democratic Progressive Party, therefore MCP is supposed to follow suit,” observed a commentator Rafiq Hajat.
Msowoya replaces Henry Chiminthu Banda of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) as speaker of Parliament who served from 2009 to 2014.
