Zomba Senior Magistrate Court has found guilty two Chancellor College Students and asked them to pay a fine of MK135, 000 for allegedly beating a man over a girl.
Zomba Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Constable Emmanuel Kachingwe confirmed of the incident and identified the two as Thokozani Meke a third year student and Wilfred Mwambira a first year student.
According to the Police, the two were charged with three count, unlawful wounding, malicious damage and theft.
Kachingwe said during the case Police Prosecutor, Inspector, Dovice Makawa told the court that on the night of 6th of June this year, the two students went to Chikanda township in Zomba and stormed the house of Aven Mussa, a man alleged to have snatched the girl friend of Meke, where they, had assaulted the complainant (Mussa) on the head with a wood, destroyed his property wealthy K50, 000 and went away with K25,000.
The PRO also stated that Mussa (22) was wounded heavily on head to the extent that he lost his memory and the two suspects were arrested by Zomba Police station after the incident.
Kachingwe also said during the court hearing, the two students were found guilty of committing offences of unlawful wounding contrary to section 241 of the penal code, malicious damage contrary to section 344 of the penal code and Theft contrary to section 278 of the penal code respectively.
“However, in her ruling Magistrate Kaira said the two should pay K60, 000 for unlawfully wounding of the Complainant,K50,000 for the malicious damage and finally K25,000 to be repaid as a compensation,” he said.
Kachingwe observed students should avoid committing criminal offences as this may jeopardize their future employment especially in the public sector, instead they should work hard in school for the betterment of the country.
Thokozani Meke 26 years hails from Lingaka Village Traditional Authority (T/A) Kachere in Dedza while Wilfred Mwambira 24 years hails from T/A Kyungu in Karonga District.
