Algeria didn’t make it easy for themselves, but advanced to the knockout rounds of the World Cup for the first time with a 1-1 tie against Russia.

Islam Slimani’s header in the 59th minute was all the Desert Foxes needed to do away with Fabio Capello’s side. While Russia looked in control for much of the match, going ahead in the 5th minute on a header by Alexsandr Kokorin, they missed several chances to seal victory. Instead, the 2018 World Cup hosts head home with little to show for their effort in Brazil.

Algeria has finally made to the final 16 after four attempts in their previous world cups.

Algeria is now the second and last African country to qualify after Nigeria in this year’s world cup.

Algeria doesn’t get long to celebrate. Their second place finish in Group H means they’ll face Germany in the Round of 16.
