Member of Parliament (MP) for Lilongwe city south east constituency Bentley Namasasu has said persistent underfunding to such institutions as Anti-Corruptions Bureau (ACB) and Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), which are mandated to deal with corruption in the country, is crippling their duties.

In his contribution to the State of the Nations Address Namasasu said the two institutions should be adequately funded so that they regain public trust.

“These bodies should be well funded and freed from political interference. Its time ACB and the office of the DPP were given space,” Namasasu said.

He then commended the president’s speech describing it as inclusive.

“The president’s speech gives proper balance of key issues and areas to deal with corruption and fraud. However we must not compromise the independence of ACB and DPP as doing so is retrogressive to our democratic course,” he said.
